How do you clean a gold or silver ring?
The gentlest way to clean a ring depends on the type of metal and any gemstones it contains. A simple ring without delicate stones can often be cleaned with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft brush or cloth.
Silver requires a little extra attention because it can tarnish and darken over time. This is due, in part, to exposure to sulfur-containing substances, moisture, cosmetics, and other chemicals. For silver, a suitable silver polishing cloth or silver cleaner can be used, but you should be careful with vigorous or repeated polishing if, for example, the ring has a deliberately oxidized surface.
Gold does not tarnish in the same way as silver, but gold jewelry can still become dull from grease, dust, and cosmetics. In such cases, gentle cleaning is often sufficient.
If the ring has a gemstone, you should examine the stone before using strong cleaning agents. Some stones are porous or have been treated in a way that makes them more sensitive to heat, chemicals, or vibrations. When in doubt, professional cleaning is the safest option.
