Collection: Belts

FAQ: Styling, Quality, and Fit

What types of belts and colors should you choose for different outfits?

Black and brown together cover the vast majority of needs in a wardrobe. A black belt is the formal choice and works well with suits, dark pants, and black shoes, while a brown belt—preferably in a cognac or mocha shade—pairs better with earth tones, chinos, and casual outfits. The most common rule of thumb is to match the belt’s color to your shoes rather than your pants.

The belt’s width also signals the level of formality: a narrow belt of about 3 centimeters is appropriate for suits and dressy attire, while a wider belt of 3.5–4 centimeters is better suited for jeans and everyday wear. It’s recommended to have at least one black and one brown leather belt in your wardrobe as a solid foundation, and only then expand your collection with colored or braided styles for more casual or festive occasions.

How do I know if a belt is of good quality?

The quality of a belt is primarily determined by the leather and the buckle. Full-grain leather, which retains the skin’s top and strongest layer of fibers, is the most durable choice and develops a natural patina over time. Split leather and so-called “genuine leather” are cheaper to produce but have a looser fiber structure that is less suitable for a product like a belt, which is subjected to tension and bending on a daily basis.

A high-quality belt can also be recognized by an even, thick layer of leather with no visible seams or frayed edges, as well as a buckle made of a durable material such as brass or stainless steel rather than a brittle zinc alloy. It’s recommended to assess a belt by bending it slightly: full-grain leather feels firm yet flexible, while lower-quality leather often feels stiff or unnaturally smooth.

How should a belt fit?

The rule of thumb is that the belt should fit well even in the middle hole, as this creates the best look and is a good indicator of whether you can adjust the belt tighter or looser as needed. It’s therefore important that the belt holds your pants up without feeling too tight when it’s in the middle hole. This leaves room for a bloated stomach or a flatter stomach.
