How should pants fit, and when are they too short?
Pants should fit comfortably at the waist or on the hips without feeling tight. With classic and tailored pants, the hem should rest on the top of the shoe with a slight drape. Wide silhouettes fall over the shoe, while cropped styles end above the ankle. Pants are too short if they inappropriately reveal socks or calves when standing upright.
What is the difference between chinos, dress pants, cargo pants, and sweatpants?
Chinos: Feature a slim or straight silhouette with a clean, smooth look and slanted side pockets. They serve as a casual pant option that is dressier than jeans but less formal than dress pants.
Suit pants: Cut with a structured fit—often featuring sharp creases or pleats at the waist—that creates a sleek, formal, and tailored look.

How often should pants be washed, and can they shrink?
Cotton pants, chinos, and cargo pants should be washed as needed at 30 degrees Celsius, turned inside out. Wool and dress pants, on the other hand, should be aired out outdoors or professionally dry-cleaned. Natural materials like cotton and wool can shrink by 2–5% at excessively high temperatures or when tumble-dried, so tumble drying is not recommended. Always make sure the pants’ zippers and buttons are fastened before washing, as they can otherwise damage other clothes being washed in the same load. The idea that you can put pants in the freezer to remove bacteria and odors is a myth. The odor is only temporarily removed while the pants dry out again. Instead, wash them as recommended. It’s a good idea to do this after wearing them a few times.
