The French fashion house was established in Paris in 1988 by the Belgian designer Martin Margiela. The Belgian designer graduated from the Antwerp Fashion Academy in 1979 and was considered early in his career to be part of the Antwerp Six, a group of important and renowned Belgian fashion designers. In 1984 Martin Margiela moved to Paris where he worked for three years as a designer for Jean Paul Gaultier. In 1988, the young designer debuted his first own collection for women, and 10 years later Martin Margiela created his first men's collection, which became known as 'line 10'. Maison Margiela has since become known for combining understated cool with a twist. The unique approach to creating deconstructed fashion items has made the brand stand as one of today's prominent avant-garde brands.
